DESIGN AND THE PLAY INSTINCT BOOK DESIGN
The differently-shaped pages in this book design for Paul Rand's essay "Design and the Play Instinct" allude to the playfulness Rand discusses and they also catch nicely on your thumb for an easy flick-through of the book. I chose to feature the color yellow because of its strong connection with happiness and playfulness, and the laser-cut front cover was also a way to delight readers.
The sense of delight continues into the inside front cover, as the counters of the cut-out letterforms are used in composing the first sentence of the book, "'I demand of art,' says Le Corbusier, 'the role of the challenger... of play and interplay, play being the very manifestation of the spirit.'"
